General Characteristics of CP Titanium Grade 4

CP titanium Grade 4 provides corrosion resistance, strength and fatigue characteristics that compare favorably to those of nickel and steel alloys. The strongest grade of unalloyed grades 1, 2, 3 and 4, this is a commercially pure, moderately formable alloy with good ductility.

Chemical Composition of CP Titanium Grade 4

• Carbon 0.080 max
• Nitrogen 0.050 max
• Oxygen 0.40 max
• Iron 0.50 max
• Hydrogen 0.015 max
• Other, 0.3 max per AMS 4921 G or 0.40 max per ASTM B 348-99
• Titanium balance

Heat Treatment of CP Titanium Grade 4

• Anneal
  • Holding at 1103° to 1301F (595° to 705°C) for two hours
  • Air cool
  • Stress relive by holding at 1004° to 1103°F (540° to 595°C)for 15 to 30 minutes
  • Air cool
• Intermediate and final annealing in inert gas or vacuum
• Perform final heat treatments in vacuum

• Marine and saltwater applications
• Chemical industry

Machinability of CP Titanium Grade 4

• Comparable to austenitic stainless steel
• Low speed, heavy feed rate and abundant cutting fluid
• Rigid setups
• Sharp tools
• Employ safety measures because titanium chips are extremely combustible

Workability of CP Titanium Grade 4

• Hot roll, forge, spin form, hot press and hydroform
• Initial roughing at 86° to 122°F (30° to 50°C) higher than beta transus
• Typically finish from 1499° to 1652°F (815° to 900°C)
• Bend, stretch, head, stamp and draw at room temperature
• Fix springback variance by hot sizing
