General Characteristics of Hastelloy N™

A high-temperature nickel alloy, Hastelloy N™ withstands aging and embrittlement. It resists oxidation for continuous service up to 1800°F (982°C) and for intermittent service up to 1900°F (1038°C). Able to be readily fabricated, it’s ideal for high-heat applications and equipment used with hot fluoride salts.

• Carbon 0.04-0.08
• Chromium 6.00-8.00
• Molybdenum 15.00-18.00
• Iron 5.00 max
• Manganese 0.8 max
• Aluminum + Ti 0.5 max
• Boron 0.01 max
• Sulfur 0.03 max
• Nickel remainder

Heat Treatment of Hastelloy N™

• Solution anneal
  • Heat to 2165°F (1038°C)
  • Soak time depends on thickness
  • Rapidly air cool

Applications of Hastelloy N™

• Extreme heat uses
• Equipment used with hot fluoride salts

Machinability of Hastelloy N™

• Low cutting speeds
• Use sintered carbide cutting tools and grind to 10-15 degree side rake angle and 6-7 degree side clearance for facing or turning operations
• Use short drill and grind with minimum clearance to clear the work – generally about 140 degrees total – when drilling
• Use sulfur-based oil coolant when drilling, or when turning, facing or boring at higher speeds

Workability of Hastelloy N™

• Readily forged  between 1600°F (871°C) and 2150°F (1177°C)
