General Characteristics of Inconel™ W

Inconel W achieves its maximum properties through age-hardening heat treatment. It’s a nickel-based alloy that offers outstanding heat, oxidation and corrosion resistance. A frequent option to Inconel X, Inconel W offers good stress-rupture and creep attributes.

Heat Treatment of Inconel™ W

Sulfur-free atmosphere for all treatments:
- Anneal – maintain between 1950° and 2000°F (1066° to 1093°C) for 20 minutes to 1 hour, then rapid cool
- Stress equalization – hold at 1600° to 1650°F (871° to 899°C) for 24 hours; rapid air cooling
- Aging – hold at 1300°F (704°C) for 16-20 hours; air cool

Machinability of Inconel™ W

Compares favorably to annealed high-speed steels
High-speed steel turning tools
- 25-35 sfpm (solution-annealed material)
- Above 10-20 sfpm (age-hardened material)
Cobalt high-speed steel – feeds of 0.015”/rev.; depth less than 3/32”
Nonferrous cutting tools – 40 sfpm; feeds of 0.015-0.025”/rev; depth to ¼”
Age-hardened materials
- Carbide tools
- Up to 60sfpm
- Feeds of 0.008-0.018”/rev.; depth up to 3/16”
High-speed steel and cast nonferrous tools
- Grind to 4-5° front and side; 0-8° back rake; 8-15° side rake; 15-25° side cutting edge angle; 10-20° end cutting-edge angle; 1/32”-3/32” nose radius
Carbide tip – same angles, but 1/32” maximum nose radius
Chip breakers recommended

Workability of Inconel™ W

Easily forged from 2225° to 1900° F (1218°to 1038°C)
Heat in atmosphere free from sulfur
Avoid hot-cold-work
