General Characteristics of Nickel 200
Nickel 200 offers exceptional mechanical attributes, holding strength at high temperatures and resisting corrosion. It’s ideal for almost any fabricating process, including welding, casting and cold working.
Chemical Composition of Nickel 200
- Nickel and cobalt 99.0 minimum
- Copper 0.25 max
- Iron 0.40 max
- Manganese 0.35 max
- Silicon 0.35 max
- Carbon 0.15 max
- Sulfur 0.01 max
Heat Treatment of Nickel 200
- Box annealing
- 1300°F (704°C) for 2 to 6 hours
- Open anneal at 1500°F (816°C) for 2 t o5 minutes or 1700°F (927°C) for ½ to 2 minutes
- Increase time by 50% if material will then be manually treated
- Bright annealing
- Box – seal boxes and use neutral or reducing gas during cooling
- Open – use sulfur-free fuel and a reducing atmosphere
- Water quench immediately

- Piping and equipment used in conjunction with alkalis
- Food processing equipment
- Rocket motors
- Drums to transport chemicals
- Equipment to store and handle fluorine and bromine
Machinability of Nickel 200
- Slower speeds and lighter feeds than mild steel
- Tungsten-chromium-vanadium or cobalt-bearing high-speed steel
- Minimum tool clearance
- Large rake angles
Workability of Nickel 200
- Forging between 2300° and 1200°F (1260°C and 649°C) recommended
- Heavy forging above 1600°F (871°C)
- Bend between 2250° and 1900°F (1232° and 1038°C)
