Alloy Information Report for Stainless Steel 403
General Characteristics of Stainless 403
This straight chromium stainless steel offers reasonable corrosion resistance and high mechanical characteristics. AISI403 offers heat resistance and a scaling temperature of about 1300°F (704°C).
Chemical Composition of Stainless 403
- Carbon 0.15 max
- Manganese 1.00 max
- Phosphorus 0.040 max
- Sulfur 0.030 max
- Silicon 0.50 max
- Chromium 11.5-13.5

Heat Treatment of Stainless 403
- Anneal by heating to 1350° to 1450°F (732° to 78°C), then air cool
- To enhance softness, hold at 1450° to 1550°F (788° to 843°C), then furnace cool
- Annealing reduces machinability
- Harden by quenching from 1750° to 1850°F (954° to 1010°C) in air or oil, then draw between 800° and 1100°F (427° and 593°C)
Applications of Stainless 403
- Furnace components
- Ladles used in molten nonferrous applications
- Stirring rods
Machinability of Stainless 403
- 200-240 Brinell hardness or cold-drawn condition recommended
- Use chip curler cutting tools when turning
- Grind slight flat on cutting lip face when drilling
- Highly concentrated sulfur oil
- Turn: 40-80 sfpm
- Mill: 35-70
- Broach: 8-15
- Ream: 20-60
- Drill: 30-60
Workability of Stainless 403
- May be cold worked
- Easily drop or hammer forged
- Preheat 2x as long as carbon steel
- Preheat to 1400° to 1450°F (760° to 788°C), then rapid heat to 2050° to 2150°F (1121° to 1177°C)
- Reheat once temperature drops to 1450° to 1600°F (788° to 871°C)
- Bury in dry lime or ash to slow cool
