General Characteristics of Stainless 502

Stainless 502 is a heat- and corrosion-resistant stainless steel is used extensively in oil and chemical plants. This 5% chromium alloy stainless steel is stronger than mild steel at higher temperatures and holds up well in the mild atmospheres found in the petroleum industry.

Iron balance

Heat Treatment of Stainless 502

Full anneal by heating to 1450° to 1550°F (788° to 843°C), then gradually furnace cool
Low anneal by heating at 1325° to 1375°F (718° to 746°C) before gradually cooling
Harden by heating at 1600° to 1700°F (871° to 927°C), then soaking at heat 1 hour minimum, oil quenching and tempering at 400° to 1400°F (204° to 760°C)

Refinery equipment, including oil pump and pipe parts

Machinability of Stainless 502

Favorable machinability when annealed
- Grind high-speed steel single-point cutting tools to the following:
- Side rake: 6-12°
- Back rake: 5-10°
- Side and end relief: 6-10°
- End cutting-edge angle: 6-15°
- Side cutting-edge angle: 10-20°
- Nose radius: 10° cutting depth
Sulfurized or chlorinated cutting fluids with high-speed steel tools
Carbide tipped tools
- Side rake: 4-12°
- Back rake: 0-5°
- Side and end relief: 4-10°
- End cutting-edge angle: 8-14°
- Side cutting-edge angle: 10-20°
- Nose radius: 1/32

Workability of Stainless 502

Initial forging at 2000° to 2200°F (1093° to 1204°XC)
Finishing forging at 1500° to 1600°F (816° to 871°C)
Preheat to 1400° to 1500°F (760° to 816°C)
All forming techniques appropriate
Slow cool or anneal following hot working
Can be cold worked when annealed, including:
- Drawing
- Forming
- Blanking
- Heading
