General Characteristics of Zirconium 32

Zirconium 32 is a reactor-grade zirconium-tin alloy that offers high-heat mechanical characteristics and resists corrosion in steam and irradiated water environments. As easy to fabricate as unalloyed metal.

Chemical Composition of Zirconium 32

• Iron 0.07-0.20
• Tin 1.2-1.7
• Chromium 0.05-0.15
• Nickel 0.03-0.08
• Iron-chromium-nickel  0.18-0.38
• Zirconium balance

Heat Treatment of Zirconium 32

• Cold-worked zirconium 32: anneal at 1250° to 1350°F  (677° to 732°C) for one hour
• Hot-worked zirconium 32: air anneal at 1400°F (760°C) for 20 minutes
• Heat for several hours at 900°F (482°C) to relieve forming stress
• Solution treat by soaking at 1950°F (1066°C) and water quenching; then reheat to no more than 1450-°F (788°C)

Applications of Zirconium 32

• Water reactors’ fuel sheathing and structural parts

Machinability of Zirconium 32

• Conventional methods; similar to titanium
• Slow speeds
• Heavy feeds
• Soluble lubricants
• Cemented carbide and high-speed tools

Workability of Zirconium 32

• Similar to titanium when rolling and forging
• Control temperatures and use heavy equipment
• 100° or 120° bending before spring-back on temper-rolled or planished zirconium
• 95° to 110° bending for soft-annealed zirconium
